The Victorian government in Australia has defined Vascular dementia, which was previously known as multi-infarct dementia, is the second most common cause of dementia. It is associated with problems in blood circulation to the brain, causing multiple strokes (infarcts) in the brain and resulting in a deterioration in mental abilities. A stroke involves the death of a section of brain tissue due to a blockage or interruption of the blood supply. A stroke can cause damage to specific areas of the brain (for example, the part of the brain responsible for speech or language) as well as producing generalized symptoms of dementia. As a result, vascular dementia may appear similar to Alzheimer's disease. A mixture of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia is a common cause of dementia, and it can sometimes be difficult to separate the two.
