As the UCSF says there is a loss of concern for one's personal appearance and patients may be increasingly unkempt early in the course of disease.

For my brother he quit taking showers, quit cutting his toe nails, and would wear the same clothes without washing them. One time we were visiting and took him and his family out to dinner, and you could tell he had not taken a shower in a few days. When we dropped them off at their house we told him we would pick him up in the morning and told him he had to take a shower. In the morning he told us that he had taken a shower, but you could tell he didn't. It is common for people with FTD to lie about their hygiene.

Things to look for

  • May not shower for days or weeks.
  • Men may not shave daily.
  • May wear the same clothes for days or weeks. (My brother wore the same pair of socks until they got holes in them.)
  • May not brush teeth.
  • May not cut toenails

One thing to watch for is the pFTD will tell you he/she has taken a shower, but never really did. A pFTD is likely to lie to you regarding personal hygiene.
